About

about RSKC

Rochfords Shotokan Karate Club was founded in 1982 by brothers Robert and John Bertie as a means of sharing their knowledge of Karate with people in the community.

It began as part of a youth club at Rochfords Youth and Community Hall, growing to a successful martial arts club for all ages in and around the local area.

In 1990, John left the UK to live in Canada, but still keeps a close interest in the club that he helped build and has frequently visited to see members take part in major competitions.

Robert went on to teach his son, Richard who went on to win National and International championships in the KUGB, BUSA and AMA. With over 30 years of experience Richard is now the joint chief instructor at RSKC.

KARATE TERMINOLOGY

As a Japanese martial art, the names of all techniques, movements and terms are Japanese words.

Students will learn the ones that apply to their training as they develop, but for reference, we feature a comprehensive list of terminology for all aspects of karate in our members only area.

  • Bunkai - Application (interpretation) of kata techniques

  • Jiyyu Ippon Kumite - Semi-free one-step sparring

  • Ippon Kumite - One-step sparring

  • Kiai - Spirit shout/focus of spiritual energy

  • Mokuso - Meditate

  • Oss - 'I understand and will try my best.' Also used to show respect and enthusiasm. Embarrassing if used outside of the dojo!
